Things to do in Austria

Austria is a country in central Europe. It is also known as the Republic of Austria and is a landlocked country. Austria has a temperate and alpine climate, as it is a country located in Alps. As the country experiences alpine climate, there are various things to do in Austria. Few such things which you can do during your stay at Austria are mentioned below.

Schonbrunn Palace

If you visit Schonbrunn Palace, you will love the ambience. This palace is situated in the outskirts of the city and it will be convenient to take a metro. There is also a park, where the visitors can relax and enjoy. Entry to the palace is free, but if visitors want to see the interiors of the palace, then they have to pay a nominal fee.

Generally three kinds of tours are conducted, namely, a big tour, an audio tour of the whole palace and a small tour. You can also walk leisurely and have a look at the palace.

Belvedere Palace

This palace was previously the residence of Prince of Savoy. Now it has been converted into a tourist attraction and visiting this palace, is one of the things to do in Austria. It has two palaces. One houses the Austrian Gallery and the other is the museum of medieval Austrian art and the museum of Austrian Baroque.

St. Peter's Church

St. Peter's church is a religious site. Many ancient sculptures can be seen and the interiors reflect the ancient past. This church is also famous for its architecture.


If you want to buy something, then you can visit Naschmarket. This is a very big market place from where you can buy whatever you want. This is basically a flea market, where you can get goods at cheap rates.

Christmas Market

Christmas market is located in front of Rathaus. It is the largest and most famous commercial place in Austria. Things that are produced in large quantities are available here and if you want to buy things in bulk, then this is the place for you.

Austrian National Library

Trip to Austria is incomplete without visiting Austrian National Library. This place is the research center. Research work regarding the history and culture of Austria is done here, dating back to the 14th century.

Central Cemetery

You must visit the central cemetery in Austria, which is the second largest cemetery in Europe. There are tombs of more than 2.5 million people. It includes people from Brahma, Beethoven, Strauss and Schubert.

Museum of Applied Arts

Things to do in Austria also include visiting the Museum of Applied Arts, which has different variety of Austrian art. Special highlight is the large collection of art works by artist Gustav Klimt.

The Vienna Prater

If you think of amusement, then you should visit the Vienna Prater. It houses a number of rides and also has a museum and a planetarium. Here you can enjoy your ride on a giant wheel that is 65 meter high and have a look at the entire park. For children there is merry-go-round, ghost train, go- carting and many similar rides.

Parliament Building

As this a landmark and heritage building, it is definitely a must see.

Kunsthaus Wien

Kunsthaus Wien is another museum in Austria, and was designed by famous architecture and artist named Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This museum has a wide collection of modern art, including Hundertwasse's own work.

Salzburg's Old Town

Things to do in Austria include visiting some of the old and ancient towns, in and around Austria. Salzburg's Old Town is one such town where you can drop in to experience the old world charm.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

This was previously a palace but now it is converted into government office. There is also a garden, in the palace ground, where there is a musical fountain.
