Church of St. Nicholas



The Church of St. Nicholas is situated at Old Town in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic. This church is an important tourist destination as well as pilgrimage center of global importance situated in the city. At the present location of the Church of St. Nicholas, a church was situated since the 12th century. It was also the most important church in the Old Town of Prague before the Tyn church was built.

The present Church of St. Nicholas was designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. The building of this church was finished in the year 1735. The church was built in a Baroque style and this amazing church is white in color. From the Old Town Square of Prague this beautiful church is clearly visible. The Church of St. Nicholas is decorated elegantly with the sculptures that are made by Antonin Braun.

The interior of the Church is beautiful and the Baroque interior of the church looks amazing and reminds one of the ancient times. The interior of the church is made by drawing inspiration from the Chapel of St. Louis des invalides that is situated in the city of Paris in France. There are some very intricate detailing in stucco decoration pattern that was made by Bernardo Spinetti and you can also see mazing frescoes on the walls of this church that are made by Peter Adam the Elder.

According to the history all the decorations of the Church of St. Nicholas were removed by the order of emperor Jozef II in th year 1781 when the emperor ordered the closure of all the churches and monasteries. The Church of St. Nicholas was used by the Russian orthodox congregation from the year 1870 to 1914. During the World War II the Czech army used the church as their station or halt. The colonel ordered the artists who were to go to the front to restore the church. When the war was over the restored Church of St. Nicholas was handed over to Czech Hussite movement.

Apart from his church situated at the old town of Prague there is also another Church of St. Nicholas in Prague. This church is situated in the lesser Town and is situated on the opposite side of the river which is named Vltava. This church is also famous among the local churches that are situated in the Lesser Town in Prague. This church is not very much known to the tourists though many of the tourists make it a point to pay a visit to this Church of St. Nicholas that is situated at the Lesser town.
